The Imperial River winds through downtown Bonita Springs on its way to Estero Bay, and for many residents it is the reason their homes have flooded. On the coast, Bonita Beach sits on Little Hickory Island between the Gulf and the bay. The city therefore deals with two different kinds of flooding: slow river water that rises after days of rain and lingers, and fast saltwater surge on the barrier island.
The Restoration Job can help you find someone to handle either one. Our free line, (888) 317-9980, is answered 24 hours a day, and we'll connect you with an independent restoration provider serving Bonita Springs and southern Lee County. We refer; the provider performs the cleanup and repairs.
How the call works: when you call (888) 317-9980, The Restoration Job connects you with an independent restoration provider that serves Bonita Springs. That provider inspects the damage, explains the scope and quotes the work. The Restoration Job doesn't perform restoration itself. Read our referral disclosure.
The 2017 Imperial River Flood
Late summer 2017 brought a one-two punch. Heavy rain from the Invest 92L system arrived in late August, and two weeks later Hurricane Irma struck on September 9 and 10 as a Category 3 storm, its eyewall passing over the city. The city reports that peak water levels in some areas ended up 6.5 feet higher than they had been at the end of July, and that FEMA ranked Bonita Springs as the third hardest hit community in Florida.
Neighborhoods along the river, including streets around Saunders Avenue and Imperial Parkway, stayed under water for more than two weeks. A South Florida Water Management District official explained at the time that the local drainage system was plugged up or trying to drain into areas that were already flooded. Owners hauled waterlogged furniture to the curb street by street.
Why Long-Standing River Water Is Harder to Clean Up
River flooding that sits in a home for days does more damage than a brief intrusion. Water wicks higher into drywall, soaks into the cores of cabinets and doors, and saturates the slab. It also picks up runoff, sediment and often septic or sewage overflow along the way. Restoration after that kind of event usually looks like this:
- Removing standing water and mud, then discarding carpet, pad and soaked upholstered furniture.
- Cutting out drywall and insulation well above the visible water line.
- Cleaning and disinfecting remaining surfaces, an approach closely related to sewage cleanup.
- Drying framing and concrete with dehumidifiers and air movers, confirmed by moisture readings, before any rebuild.

Bonita Beach and the Coastline During Ian
Hurricane Ian in September 2022 brought a different hazard. The National Hurricane Center estimated 8 to 12 feet of inundation above ground in Estero, Bonita Beach, Bonita Springs and North Naples, with sensors from San Carlos Island southward measuring more than 9 feet above high tide. In this area, the most severe impacts stayed along the immediate coastline. Homes and condos on the beach and along the bayfront took saltwater, while inland neighborhoods saw mostly wind and rain damage.
Saltwater-soaked homes need prompt flood cleanup, and electrical systems, AC equipment and appliances exposed to it should be checked before they are run again.
Seasonal Residents and Unattended Homes
More than a third of the city's housing units were classified as vacant in the 2020 census, largely seasonal homes. The median age of residents was close to 62. Many owners spend the summer up north, which is exactly when storms and heavy rain arrive. A roof leak or AC drain backup in an empty house can go unnoticed long enough for mold to take hold. Arrange regular check-ins, keep the AC running at a reasonable setting, and make sure someone local has a key and your insurance details.

Stormwater Projects and Your Own Lot
Since Irma the city has put more attention and money into drainage. It adopted an Imperial River Basin Management Plan in 2012 and in 2019 approved a stormwater assessment on residential properties to fund the system. Those projects help, but they don't eliminate the risk for homes in low areas near the river. Check your flood zone, consider flood insurance even outside a mapped high-risk zone, and keep gutters and yard drains clear before the summer rains. Bonita Springs Water Damage Questions
I live near the Imperial River. What should I do before the summer rains?
Find out your flood zone and whether your home has an elevation certificate, buy flood coverage if you don't have it, and move valuables off the floor in rooms that have flooded before. Keep drains and swales near your lot clear. Photograph the inside of your home now so you have a record of its condition if you ever need to file a claim.
My Bonita Springs house sat in floodwater for days. Can the drywall be dried in place?
Usually not. Water that stands for days rises well up the wall through capillary action and is typically contaminated by runoff and sewage. Drywall, insulation and carpet that it touched are generally removed and disposed of, with surfaces then cleaned and disinfected. Solid wood, block walls and concrete slabs can usually be dried and kept once moisture readings confirm they are back to normal.
Can someone start drying my seasonal home while I am out of state?
Yes, as long as someone can provide access. Call (888) 317-9980 and we will connect you with an independent restoration provider serving Bonita Springs. Ask the provider to send photos, moisture readings and a written scope before demolition begins, and let your insurer know about the loss right away so an adjuster can be assigned while the work is documented.
